Kate McClure of New Jersey thought she had enough gas to make it home. The gas needle was on E but she felt she could make it. But then the car started sputtering and she knew she was in trouble, she pulled over to the side of the road. She was on I95 in Philadelphia and not in a good area. That was when a scruffy bearded man approached her.
Johnny Bobbitt Jr. is a homeless Marine Corp Veteran who happened to be nearby. He explained to Kate that the area was not safe and asked could he go get some gas for her? Unfortunately Kate had no money. Johnny volunteered to buy gas for her with his only money, $20. He was concerned and wanted to make sure she got home.
Kate was very appreciative and returned several times to give Johnny cash, food and clothes. But she felt that she needed to do more, he was still homeless, jobless and without a vehicle. She decided to start a online “Go fund Me” page where people could learn about Johnny, share the story and make donations. Kate’s hope was to raise $10,000 to rent Johnny a apartment, get him a reliable vehicle and cover living expenses for awhile until he could get on his feet.
$110,000 was raised on Thanksgiving morning alone. $400 has been raised in the last 15 minutes. When informed of his newfound windfall, Johnny’s first thought was to pay it forward. He is in the process of deciding what private parties and organizations he wishes to help.
